Both SD and RR allude to other texts in their essays: SD cites Christopher Lasch's The Culture of Narcissism, and RR makes repeated reference to Richard Hoggart's The Uses of Literacy.

Do SD and RR include references to these outside texts for similar reasons? Who loses more authority by citing another writer's ideas?
