S.T. Coleridge's "This Lime-Tree Bower My Prison"
by Amy Hellam
To represent this poem in a different manner than
S.T. Coleridge's verse paragraphs, I used a tree diagram. The tree
diagram seemed an appropriate choice because it allowed a way to
illustrate the layers of the poem in an orderly and well mapped
manner. I incorporated the entire poem into the diagram to display
how the poem divides and reunites itself. To read the diagram, begin
with the trunk of the tree. The trunk of the tree is concerned with
the speaker and how the speaker is feeling. Since he is melancholy,
in the beginning of the poem, I used the color blue to emphasize
the phrases which create a sad feel. One can see the color blue
repeated in the segment directly above the trunk, which is the part
that tells of Charles's background. The left and center areas of
the tree are connected to each other because they represent the
events and emotions that the speaker imagines his friends to be
experiencing. The far left side is comprised of passages that are
concerned with the friends in general. The center of the diagram
contains the passages that specifically talk about Charles. The
far right side of the tree contains passages of the poem that discuss
the speaker and the speaker's experiences.
All the branches connect to the last few lines of
the poem because it describes how the rook unifies both parties
(the speaker and his friends). I used different colors in the text
to emphasize the mirroring qualities of the poem. What the speaker
imagines his friends to experience is also reflected in his own
experience. This mirroring of events reinforces the idea, presented
in the poem, that all aspects of nature are equally fascinating.
In addition to the fact that all nature is beautiful, the poem emphasizes
the fact that enlightenment can happen anywhere since it is an internal
process and not reliant on one specific point in nature.
As before stated, the color blue represents the sad
images in the poem. The color green represents the passages that
describe nature. The feelings of joy and delight were colored pink.
The two times the word "soul was used is highlighted in purple.
Finally, the main messages of the poem that discuss the spirituality
and enlightening qualities of nature are colored in red.
